In Memory of Our Departed Equine Friends

Candlelight

As my candle, burning bright
Sends shadows off on this dark night
It offers peace, and hope and love
To the horses dancing up above.

My prayers and thoughts will help them find
Beloved friends they left behind.
So they may comfort us in turn,
And thus it is my candle burns.

With quiet tears, lovingly shed
I hear the horses, overhead.
Their pounding hooves are thunder stirred,
For another friend has joined the herd.

CAMPARI
1988-2010
Campari, David Wright's retired Grand Prix partner,
had to be euthanized on March 19, 2010 due to severe colitis.
He will be sadly missed by all at Hunters Court.

Mine Timber
by Tom Goodner
May 2006

When I first laid eyes on Timber
He was running in a field.
His racing days had ended,
Former owners unhappy with the yield.

Around about six months later
With a few dollars I could count,
I went to see if he could be
My next equine paramount.

He looked a sheddin' shaggy,
Was thin and unfit too.
But he had that big step beauty,
Over every test jump he flew.

With his mistress we struck a bargain
'Though the vet had found a glitch.
My thoughts were, I've shopped enough,
He'll do the work without a hitch.

The first two years were fits and starts.
I had yet to realize
He was more than just a useful horse,
Had a competitor's heart inside.

Sure enough he was mighty green,
Flighty with willful thoughts.
With even the toughest ride he gave me
I knew the right one I had bought.

An amateur will make mistakes
Lord knows I've made my share,
Valiant Timber was ready to forgive
And gallop on without a care.

Timber

The true heart of this story
Now revealed for all to see,
I thought I was teaching Timber
He was teaching me.

Many a challenge we faced together
On verdant ground, unseen and far.
All he asked was that I sit up and ride,
Go ahead and raise the bar.

Timber's dreams were fields of green
A few grazers to be his herd
Just pull those shoes, groom no more
Freedom is the word.

And this I planned to fulfill
When working day was done,
Equine years can be so brief
I foresaw the setting sun.

But for all the plans and dreams we dream
There can be a fatal flaw,
That can stop a thousand pounds of might
It felled Mine Timber to the straw.

Now what can be a lasting legacy
For a simple equine soul,
But that my Timber was one hell of a horse
Oh how I miss him so.
